Initially when I envisaged creating this piece, I expected to use a wide variety of shots.
For my live footage, I hoped to use a minimum of two cameras to allow for medium and close up shots across a range of speakers and to include some shots panning and tracking for B-roll shots.. but it didn't quite work out that way.
On the day of live shooting, my phone camera decided it wasn't going to co-operate with the microphone I had attached, although it worked well through testing. In addition, the tripod failed during shooting without me noticing!
As such, I was left with one camera capturing only an (unintentionally) slightly upwards tilting cowboy shot (audio unattached to my microphone, so intended as a back up only) and no motion on my shots.
In addition, my second and third speakers for the film were unexpectedly ill during the week of shooting (as I had been the previous two weeks - perils of working in a school environment in Winter!), leaving me to work with one roll of live footage of one speaker - who was thankfully very thorough and engaging in the content with which he provided me.
Shot Types
Live Footage
The Live Footage was shot mainly as in medium shot, with one "cowboy" shot towards Rúadhán laughing. When editing, I resized the shot to appear as a left-sided medium close up. My aim here was to focus on the emotions and expressions of Rúadhán's face in telling stories and giving personal reactions to this intimate way of working with people's emotions and thoughts.
B-Roll Footage
Initially I took multiple shots from around the school, and of the exterior of the school, intending to include these in the intro and outro to the piece. However, when editing, I felt these detracted from the personal, intimate nature of the storytelling in this instance.
I also wanted to include footage of teachers and young people but didn't have sufficient time or quality equipment to capture the type of images I wanted for the project.
Instead, I edited a number of scenes from a video that was previously shot in the school , taking care to choose images in line with the theme of co-operation and group work
These scenes included
- a left panning shot depicting a teacher giving books to a student who walks with another student from left to right
- a shot tracking and zooming into a student in a classroom
- Interior close up shot of a man's arm on a steering wheel to the left of a woman out of shot who turns towards the man mid-shot.
